The Case of the Missing DPN

Before I launch into the latest, let me point out one important fact: normally, I knit socks with 5 DPNs.

OK? On with the show, which provided my family with entertainment rivaling the season finale of many a TV program.

I was sitting in bed, knitting on my sock. I was excited because I haven't been doing a whole lot of knitting, but was finally feeling like tackling some WIPs.

So there I am, finished with the leg, starting on the heel flap. I don't need all the DPNs now, so I set one aside. Later, however, Weedinator comes to bed & I decide to knit in the family room, where I'll have more light. I gather my things & can't find the 5th DPN. I don't need the 5th DPN at the moment since I'm still working the heel, but I want to know where it is for later.

I start out calmly, knowing it has to be right there somewhere. After all, I was just sitting up in bed. I start moving pillows. No DPN. I pull back covers. Still no DPN. Weedinator asks what I'm looking for & I describe the DPN in full detail, although I can't tell you what I ate for breakfast. I'm afraid that if I don't get it out of the bed, someone will roll on top of it & break it; or, I'm afraid it'll be 2 a.m. & I'll feel it sticking me in the back. Finally, I make Weedinator get out of bed (no, I don't care that it's been a long day for him & I'm inconveniencing him), pull all the covers & pillows off, endure his teasing me about crumbs in the bed, but still, no DPN. He crawls back in bed, where I toss the covers on top of him & leave, dejected.

I sit in the family room & dump the contents of my knitting bag. I flip through books & magazines. Then I go back into the bedroom with a flashlight & look all around the bed, under the bed, under my yarn chest, etc. No DPN. I go back up front, grumbling all the while. I pick up my sock again, knowing that once I finish the heel, I'll need that other DPN when I start on the foot. Yes, I can knit with 4 DPNs instead of 5, but I like using 5. I have another set of the same size in my needlecase, but that set is longer in length & I don't like using them for socks. Is anyone out there saying "anal retentive" yet? All these thoughts are going through my head when I look at the pattern again. On the leg, I was only using 3 DPNs & knitting with the 4th. I had forgotten that I'd followed the pattern exactly & only used 4 DPNs total...which means, the 5th DPN is safely in my needlecase where it's been all this time.

If I didn't just make a case for knitting socks on two circulars, I don't know what else I've done.

Fancy Silk Sock, WIP

Only four DPNs. Huh.

I'm sorry, I find nothing odd about this behavior whatsoever. You are as sane as I am :D

I'm with Nettie...

Too funny! And yes, I agree it is time to go the 2 circs or magic loop route. =)

LOL! I see Magic Loop in your future. I do that all the time too.

I always stick mine in my hair, then I waste a half hour looking for it in the sofa cushions only to find it poking out of my head when I catch a glimpse of my reflection while out in public.

Heh - I'd be exactly the same looking for the missing dpn! But too too funny that you never used it in the first place!!

Well, you've been married longer than me but I offer this bit of friendly advice -

DON'T TELL THE WEEDINATOR ABOUT THIS
I have learned that weedinators (or hubby-bubbys as they are known in my household) like being in the right and don't mind using the righteous indicnation when they feel they have cause.

(Being right is so rare for them and they have that gene that makes them point out things that don't need to be pointed out. They can't really help it!)

Peace in the household demands he not be told of this oh so understandle faux pas. Better to have it kept a secret amongst the knitting sisters who understand and empathize.

Um, yeah been there. Ready to cry and everything. Making promises to myself, I know I am not going to keep - not knitting in bed and all that. I love DPN, tried knitting socks 2 @ a time on circulars not a fan too slow, but who am I.

I don't think that's anal retentive at all. You're a knitter after my own heart. I once lost a (size 10 straight, mind you) knitting needle at the beach house mid-project, searched for it all week, and never found it myself--my nephew did. I made him up a special certificate which I presented him with later, but I still think he didn't quite understand the gravity of the situation he rescued me from.

Ha! I'm quite sure I've done similar things before. Your sock is lovely :)

I want to lol so bad but I can feel your pain. I once went crazy looking for dpn when I had forgotten that I had tucked it in my fro while I did the heel (ugh). Magic loop all the way!

Too Funny.

I remember I finally found an easy sock pattern, went to Walmart to buy dpns, get home all comfy and decided I would start on my sock pattern, looked all around for them.. no DPNs. The next day my mom called to tell me that she found some shish kabob sticks in her bag of groceries.

That must have been a long day for you too. I like knitting socks with 5 instead of 4 needles too. I end up sticking the parked needles in my pony tail sometimes and then can't find it either and wonder why people look funny at me. There we go, needle found.

Everything you've described for your dpn search is very normal. What I thought was funny is that you went back into the/your bedroom with a flashlight. Picturing this just cracks me up !!!

Hmmm...this sounds familiar. I'm always ripping off sofa cushions and dumping out baskets looking for my size 1 dpns. They're wily and constantly making a break for it. Sadly, I'm down to a mere 3 needles in size 6. Where the hell the other two went, I cannot say, but I'm sure I'll be stabbed by one of them some dark night...they're lying in wait for me, I know it.

Don't worry, you are not alone. The scene that you describe sounds familiar & it has happened many times with me. But I am still knitting with dpns despite all that drama.

ROTFL!!!

Gurl....you have made the case for 1 needle for socks!! ML all the way baby!!! ;o)

And funny @ Nettie and UrbanKnitrix too! ;op

Oh dear. These things happen to me regularly. I call them "having a senior moment", a symptom of my rapid aging process.

I think that this is completely normal knitting behavior. I haven't tried circular needles for socks yet, but I imagine I can save a lot of "where did my 5th needle" time if I learned.

Melodye said...

Perfectly normal behavior. Only non-knitters would think it's odd. DHs married to knitters understand as well. They jus pretend they don't.

I once tore apart a whole box office looking for a missing DPN. They all thought I was a total whacko...

Fools.

ROFL @ about the behavior with nettie and ava.

yes, please learn MAGIC LOOP. save yourself the trouble of needing even two needles to knit socks and roll with one. you won't regret it! ^_^ join the dark side....we have cookies (saw that on FaceBook and it still cracks me up, especially with the darth vader face)!!!

oh yeah, meant to tell ya, i didn't switch blog urls cause of any knit bloggers, had much more to do with muggles (non-knitters) and an ex-BF than anything else. ^_^ me loves me fellow knitstars!!!

love the colorway of your yarn too!

MadMad said...

Wha-? That's not normal? Of course it is! I was thinking you were going to find it behind your ear, though. Yours was even better!

Anna said...

you gotta send me your email! mine's is goldknits@mac.com . if you save http://www.yarn-unit.com, you'll be able to click on the KnitStar Blog icon to get there, no need to remember all that gobbley goo, LOL! ^_^

Yep, I've done that, too. Though, I admit to knitting with double points at the moment. I don't have two size 8 circulars. Too bad for me.

Well, knit socks with 4 dpns! Sometimes I do it that way!

Vanessa said...

I lose my DPNs all the time too! They must go to the same place missing socks go when they don't come out of the dryer!

WandaWoman said...

I can totally relate to your dpn drama. It happens with me all the time too. Glad you were able to find it. I still love my dpns and that's what I use exclusively for knitting my socks.

Jenny Girl said...

ha-ha too funny! I do this with my regular needles too! Like when I lend a pair to my girlfriend and completely forget. Crazy...just crazy :)

Good work, detective. :)

You have me laughing outloud. LOL That's exactly how I would feel:) and have actually done. I use to knit my socks on five dpns and now it's on four. A dpn went missing and hubby asked me why I just don't go out and buy another set. I told him that's not the point, I had already had another set. I wanted the dpn I was missing. It too was in a case but in with different size dpns.So happy for you finding that dpn! Yep, totally can relate.

Hey Girl!
Long time no comments...sorry, I've not been around for a while! Had to stop by to say "hey"....LOL, reads like a normal, everyday knitting moment to me! I, too, knit socks with 5 dpns (when I use dpns, I'm now a 2 circ girl)....and I would have done the EXACT thing! You are just a natural knitter ;0)

Lovely red sock. I don't know why I can never seem to find a red that red.

don't talk to me about dpn... my eldest threw his Nintendo DS on the sofa in a fit of rage and snapped SNAPPED!!! my fifth needle in half... we were on holiday... hundreds of miles from other dpn needles...

he's lucky to be alive, and he knows it.

I think we all have lost those dang dpns, it's a conspiracy actually... Oh, and thanks for the nomination!
